Slow Cooker Apple Cider

As the days, hopefully, get cooler something that I love to make is apple cider. Here is the link to my original recipe but below I have noted some changes that I have made in following iterations of this recipe.

For the summer I used a spice mix of lavender, cinnamon and cloves and after straining I put the cider back in the slow cooker and simmered it with lemon slices for a couple of hours. For this recipe I used 1/3 cup of honey instead of brown sugar. From there I poured it in mason jars to chill and drank cold.

From my first batch – made with a bit too much brown sugar but oranges and cranberries added a couple hours before serving (while it was being heated) add just the right amount of tartness.

This fall I used a chai spice mix. If you don’t have a chai spice mix you can make it from the following:

  • 1/2 tsp. Cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. Ginger
  • 1/4 tsp. Cloves
  • 1/4 tsp. Black Pepper
  • 1/4 tsp. Cardamom
  • 1/4 tsp. Nutmeg

If you don’t have whole spices you use, cheese cloth tied with string works great but loose leaf tea filters also work wonders. This recipe was made with a combination of honey and brown sugar. I have also been drinking it cold but only because it is still in the 90°’s in Texas.

I hope that you enjoy this recipe and the variations. I’m also interested in hearing about how your trials turn out!
