Writing Group: Poetry and Idioms

The prompt for this week was to write poetry and include idioms. Idioms are not only language specific, because they rarely translate well, they can also be very regionally specific. One of the idioms in my poem got some raised eyebrows because it was one they hadn’t heard before – can you guess which one?

Idioms are phrases which cannot be understood simply by looking at the meaning of the individual words in the phrase (liberalarts.oregonstate.edu)

In most writing idioms aren’t the best to use because they can be easily misunderstood but for writing exercises I think they are fun and worth the time. What do you think? Let me know in the comments!

Rain

The sky opens up
It’s raining cats and dogs
But my grandparents
Would call it a turd floater

Buckets of water
Pouring pouring
From the sky

Maybe, just maybe
All this water
Will cleans the
Darkness from us all

We are all in hot water
And with the way things are going
It’s just getting hotter

Watering the truth down
Claiming its fake
Won’t stop us all from drowning

It’s time, time
To pull our heads out
Of the clouds

To act before we too
Go the way of
The non-avian dinosaurs
