Writing Group: Screenplay Part I

This is weeks late. I’ve been busy. This prompt is a bit of an attempt at writing a screenplay. Fun fact: from the research I did before this prompt, there are no hard and fast rules for writing a screenplay.

Part one of our screenplay prompts was just to set the scene. Dialogue will be added in part two. This is a scene from my work-in-progress. So, maybe a little spoiler but nothing too crazy. There is a lot of context not included here, for obvious reasons.

Action and Setting

Fade in from last scene

Setting: Mid-morning on a sunny early spring day. Two people, a tall muscular man with curly golden hair and eyes like the sea, is standing next to a petite woman with shoulder length dark brown hair and gray eyes that see too much. Both are dressed casually, jeans, t-shirts, tennis shoes. They are in a rectangular courtyard of red brick with glass windows and doors for each studio front. The view of the sky is blocked by a canvas cover that lets in just enough sunlight. Each artist studio name is in black or white lettering across the door. The windows are left unobscured so that visitors can see the art or works-in-progress exhibited inside.

Paintings, sculptures, abstract art, and before the man and woman the studio is a blank space. White walls, a forgotten easel in a corner, empty hooks and wire hanging on the walls. A canvas waiting to be filled.

The woman bounces on her toes – maybe excitement, maybe nerves. A set of keys jingle in her hand, an uneven chiming in the quiet.

The man smiles down at her, trying to figure out everything going through her head. He is not completely successful but is successful enough to try and figure out the right words.

They banter.

She smiles.

She lets out a long breath.

She steps forward to unlock the door.
