I am listening to the whole of the Codex Alera series on audiobook through my local library. It is wonderful because it doesn’t cost me anything but the library only has one digital audiobook copy and there is often a wait. So no promises on how often I’ll get these reviews done. Supporting the local library is worth the wait though.

Academ’s Fury is set two years after the events Furies of Calderon. Tavi is now a student at the academy at the capital and a page to Gaius, First Lord of Alera. This book dives more into the internal struggles that face Alera. Civil war is brewing and alliances are changing making for some interesting bed fellows. Outside force are beginning to see the division in Alera.

One of my favorite things about this book is the introductions of some new beings. My favorite of which is the Canim, they are a wolf like beings. Where as the Marat look like humans with differences in culture, and ability the Canim have a cast with ‘magical’ abilities but most of them are warriors. Different as they are Tavi manages to gain the respect of the Canim Ambassador, Varg. He is an intelligent and subtle being with a clear sense of the type of fight he believes in.

I really enjoy this book and the little details that pull things together. Recommended for fans of fantasy, magic, politics, and well done world building.
