Writing Group: About Plants

This prompt was just to write about plants: trees, flowers, cactus and in whatever way made you happy. The pieces that people produced for this prompt were a lot of there were other similar to mine about specific species of plants but there were also creative pieces. There was one with definite horror vibes about an oak tree.

Do you have a favorite plant? Let me know in the comments. Happy reading.

Baldcypress

Cathedrals have flying buttresses but they borrowed the idea from nature, from trees. Those supporting columns flaring out from the base, giving stability to the tallest of building, to the grandest of trees.

This particular tree stands out and not just because it has knees. Parts of its root system sticking out of the ground and the water. It is unique too for its heartwood.

Heartwood: (n) the dense inner part of a tree trunk, yielding the hardest timber.

For this wood is resistant to rot caused by water. Designed by nature over eons as it grew in swampy groves. With tall trunks it makes excellent wood for docks and other water structures. Yet, there are other oddly endearing features of it as well. It is a conifer with feather-like needles but not an evergreen.

Deciduous: (adj) (of a tree or shrub) shedding its leaves annually.: “sun-loving deciduous trees like aspen”.

Conifer: (n) a tree that bears cones and needle-like or scale-like leaves that are typically evergreen. Conifers are of major importance as the source of softwood, and also supply resins and turpentine.

This deciduous conifer is the baldcypress or swamp-cypress drooping its needles each fall. A tree of riverbanks and floodplains. A tree that looks out of place out of home when used as a lawn ornament but who can unfurl in all its splendor along a marshy lake bed.
