For spooky season, one of our prompts was to write an interview with a mythical or magical creature in the style of Interview with a Vampire. I have a werewolf problem and I love the idea of playing with the idea of what is a monster.
What do you think it means to be a monster? Let me know in the comments. Happy reading.
Interview with a Werewolf
Interviewer: Hello Mr… ah I wasn’t given a name.
Shifter: You can call me Rome.
Interviewer: Mr. Rome?
Shifter: Just Rome. I ain’t fantasy.
Interviewer: Right.
Note: Rome is unassuming at first glance. Thirty something looking. Blue flannel shirt, faded jeans, scuffed brown boots. Black hair that is a bit long, tanned skin, but muscled under the shirt and his eyes, an intense black with a light in them makes me shiver. His accent is a thick creole.
Interviewer: Rome, as I understand it from my editor, that set up this interview, you are a member of the shapeshifter community. Can you tell me what you shift into?
Shifter: I am a wolf.
Note: He cocks his head at me like a dog but it’s not cute like a dog. Why did I agree to do this?
Interviewer: A wolf, yes, and how long have you been a wolf.
Shifter: *scratches two day stubble on his chin* I was turned durin’ the revolution 1777 or so, wasn’ the first year but I can tell you it made huntin’ red coats fun. *he smiles then, lost in a memory*
Interviewer: If I understand it then being a wolf makes you immortal?
Shifter: *He laughs then* No, being a wolf makes me damn hard to kill. Age won’t take me but madness might or another wolf, maybe a bomb.
Note: His eyes have brightened as if excited at the prospect of something trying to kill him. Am I going to die here? Why did I agree to the monster creature interviews???
Interviewer: What is life like as a wolf?
Shifter: *he shrugs* Boring mostly, I work, I work out. Datin’ sucks but I have my hobbies, like hunting.
Note: Rome smiles with teeth as I swallow hard at his answer.
Interviewer: And what do you hunt, Rome?
Shifter: Predators. It’s rather satisfying to watch them realize that they aren’t the most frightening thing out there.
Interviewer: Do you mean like coyotes, wild cats, and bears.
Shifter: *He laughs again, throwing his head back this time* Fuck no, I leave natures predators alone. They have their niche and I have mine. *He leans toward me in his chair* You want real honesty? The kind that has me here under a name we both know is false.
Interviewer: Yes
Shifter: I hunt the type of predators that think they can pay their way out of a jail cell. The kind that think they are protected by their badge. The kind that I smell on little kids. Want to know something else?
Interviewer: *I nod, mouth dry*
Shifter: I’m an old wolf, I have excellent control and yes, I shift with the moon but not only when it is full. The ones with dark souls that can’t keep their hands to themselves never learn, their blood is sour but their fear is sweet and I drink it down. *He pauses, and I can breath again* Does that make me the monster you thought I was when I walked in?
Interviewer: I… I don’t know
Shifter: *He stands up slowly and drops a business card with only a number on my notes* Let me know when you decide. *He walks out*
