The prompt for this week was to write a poem with sound. I do my best to highlight different literary elements and styles of writing in writing group. Yes, there are open ended prompts but I also like trying to, not teach per se, but to showcase different things that people can include in their writing. If you don’t know about a thing, you can’t use the thing. Onomatopoeias can feel childish, but I think, if used well they can add another layer to writing, help pull in another of the senses. Let me know what you think of this bit of figurative language in the comments.
Onomatopoeia: a figure of speech in which a word imitates the sound associated with an action or an object, effectively mimicking the sound it describes (Poetryfoundation.org).
Clip, clip, clip, clop
Clip, clip, clip… clop
Damn it.
Damn it.
Clip, clip, clip, clop
Clip, clip, clip, clop
Not again. Not again.
The farrier was just here.
Clip, clip, clip, clop
Clip, clip, clip, clop
Freaking rain.
Fucking mud.
Clip, clip, clip, clop
Clip, clip, clip, clop
I will deal with this tomorrow.
I cannot talk to anyone else today.
Clip, clip, clip, clop
Clip, clip, clip, clop
A soft nose nuzzles me,
Searching for treats.
Clip, clip, clip, clop
Clip, clip, clip, clop
Giggles bubble up
I oblige, offering a sugar cube
Clip, clip, clip, clop
Clip, clip, clip, clop
“It’s not your fault
You threw a shoe”
Clip, clip, clip, clop
Clip, clip, clip, clop
My mare sighs.
Happy with her treats.
