We decided to go all out on the camp cooking on our tent camping trip this summer at Caddo Lake. Keltin picked out the recipes from a cookbook we have called The New Camp Cookbook. Due to the heat though, we did not build or cook over a campfire, it was just to dang hot. For cooking we used a camp griddle that runs off propane and a pocket rocket stove that runs off IsoPro fuel. The great thing about car camping is that weight is not an issue and we can bring essentially a small mobile kitchen, including a sink!

The key to camp cooking is doing the prep work before leaving home. Things that we did before leaving home:
- Selected recipes
- Grocery shopping
- Made cold brew coffee concentrate
- Diced vegetables
- Made foil pack dinners

Despite all our prep-work we did forget a few things: can-opener, 1/2 & 1/2, and a spatula. There is a Dollar General fairly close the the Caddo Lake entrance and when we went in to get our forgotten things they defiantly knew we had left things at home and were camping. We probably weren’t the first to forget things.

This was a fun but hot weekend outdoors. If you haven’t ever cooked over an open fire I highly suggest trying it at least once. Do you have a favorite campfire recipe? Let me know in the comments. Remember to leave no trace and safe travels.
