The East doors of the Baptistery of San Giovanni were called by Michelangelo, upon their completion, the Gates of Paradise. Ten panels depicting the Old Testament in images laid in gold. Even if you do not go into the Baptistery itself it is difficult not to stop and stare at these magnificent doors and the images inlaid.
The doors were created by Lorenzo Ghiberti and installed in 1452. They are a Renaissance masterpiece. I did not go into the Baptistery when in Florence. Like the Duomo itself, this was due to time constraints. There is just so much to see in this magical city. The birth place of the Italian Renaissance has a lot to offer. The details are what make it beautiful.
