Title: The Darkest Part of the Forest
Author: Holly Black
Publication Date: 2015
Publishing House: Hachette Book Group

I have a good friend that is a librarian and during one of her visits over the summer we ended up at a used book store – not an uncommon occurrence for us. One of the books that she suggested and was The Darkest Part of the Forest. This Holly Black is a fantasy young adult novel in a version of the world where there are places where humans live near the faerie folk. The Folk can be beautiful and terrible and wicked. From the book:

In the woods is a glass coffin. It rests on the ground, and in it sleeps a boy with horns on his head and ears as pointed as knives….

Hazel and her brother Ben grew up playing as if they were the knights to the boy in the glass coffin. Fighting monsters in their stories but things all change when the boy wakes up.

I really enjoyed this book. It wasn’t a happy story and various parts are actually quite gruesome. The faerie folk are more like the ones in the old stories, cruel beings with black hearts, not all of them of course but many. Full of love and loss and riddles, magic and beauty it is a quick read that is easy to get lost in.

This is a story for fans of faerie stories who want to see their darker side.
