Writing Group: Observation

The prompt for this week was to write a piece that was observation only, no added emotional bias. I feel like a lot of these ended up being horror. This was difficult to write. As writers we try so hard to infuse our writing with emotion and removing that emotion is not easy. I decided to go very clinical with mine and I hope it comes across the way I intended it. Happy reading.

Daily Report: AM & PM

Date: August 2020

Report: Morning

Subject A came in with shortness of breath and fatigue. Their skin was pale and covered in light sweat. They sat in the waiting room for two hours. They spoke to the nurses several times. The nurse sent them back to their seat each time as there were a number of others before them in higher states of emergency. At the end of the second hour they proceeded to faint in an attempt to get drugs from the staff. To avoid additional interruptions to the staff  they were put into a hall bed.

Subject B entered the ER with a deep laceration on the palm of their right hand due to an early morning accident. The hand was wrapped in a dirty towel. They were taken back to a private room thirty minutes after arrival.  

Report: Evening

As the attending for Subject A I determined that the cause of their issues was due to their weight on their short frame and mild dehydration. No testing needed. IV fluids and two acetaminophen were provided for their complaint of abdominal pain. They were discharged after five hours in the ER. 

Subject B was given IV fluids and hydrocodone for pain management while they waited for me to attend. The x-ray ordered determined that the accident did not damage any bones in the hand. Direct lidocaine was injected around the wound before sutures were used to close the laceration. Ten day round of antibiotics and Tylenol 3 were sent to the patient’s preferred pharmacy. They were discharged after 2 hours in the ER.
