Title: Tress of the Emerald Sea
Author: Brandon Sanderson
Publication Date: 2023
Publishing House: Dragonsteel Entertainment
If you have been following this blog for a while you know that I fell in love with the Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson. When I heard that he was publishing some standalone novels in The Cosmere, this is the shared universe of many of his novels, I knew I had to read them. I listened to this book as a digital download from my local library. If you love to read and don’t want to buy books then I highly suggest supporting your local library.
Synopsis:
#1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson expands his Cosmere universe shared by The Stormlight Archive and Mistborn with a new standalone novel for everyone who loved The Princess Bride. Narrated by Michael Kramer.
The only life Tress has known on her island home in an emerald-green ocean has been a simple one, with the simple pleasures of collecting cups brought by sailors from faraway lands and listening to stories told by her friend Charlie. But when his father takes him on a voyage to find a bride and disaster strikes, Tress must stow away on a ship and seek the Sorceress of the deadly Midnight Sea. Amid the spore oceans where pirates abound, can Tress leave her simple life behind and make her own place sailing a sea where a single drop of water can mean instant death?

The great and terrible thing about this book is that while technically the story is standalone it is part of a vast universe. Honestly, I love and hate that at the same time because I always love to know more in a well built world but there are already so many books on my to read shelf.
This book is a wonderful invention of the damsel in destress trope and I loved every minute of it. Tress is a wonderful heroine, she is curious, intelligent, and most importantly empathetic. She does have faults, she is naive and afraid and doesn’t know how to ask for help.
One of the most interesting things about this story is how it’s told. It is a first person narrative but from the perspective of someone who is, in this book, a minor character. All of the little random thoughts from this character about things going on in the story had me giggling the whole time.
I recommend this book to those that are interested in reading a Brandon Sanderson book but are intimidated by the length of his series. I recommend this book for fans of fantasy, and for those looking for a good story. Happy reading.
