Kansas: Mount Sunflower

To visit the highest point in the state of Oklahoma, Black Mesa Summit, we hiked 9 miles round trip. To visit the highest point in the state of Kansas, we drove right up to it. I will admit, it was a nice change. That being said, Mount Sunflower is in the middle of nowhere Wallace County, Kansas. I joke that a lot of stuff in Kansas is at least 90 minutes from everywhere but this is way out there.

Jokes aside, the spot is beautiful. A point where a visitor can look in all directions and be surrounded by the Great Plains. It is easy to imagine massive herds of bison moving across these vast open plains. Mount Sunflower sits at 4,039 feet of elevation and is only about half a mile from the Colorado state border. This state highpoint is located on private land that the public is welcome to visit as long as they are respectful when visiting.

There is a little covered that has a free little library next to the Mount Sunflower sign area. All-in-all, we didn’t stay too long but it was great to visit! Have you visited your state’s highest point of elevation? Let me know in the comments and save travels.
