By Just a few miles outside of Lindsburg is Coronado Heights. This park has a castle and a ton of stone picnic tables. The day we visited it was too hot to picnic as the table don’t have shade but the view from the roof of the castle is fantastic, a 360° of the surrounding countryside. Kansas is not quite as flat as all the jokes make it out to be.
Some tips for visiting: Coronado Heights is free to visit but it does get busy. To get there you do have to drive on dirt roads, make sure your vehicle is up too it and the road is narrow in places as it spirals up to the hill top. Also, there is a restroom but it is questionable. I would suggest stopping in town before heading to the park.
Coronado Heights was built in the 1930’s as a WPA project and is named after the explorer Francisco Vasquez de Coronado. If Coronado actually visited this particular hill top during his search for gold is unknown but the park itself is a hidden gem. The old stone and the open view make all who visit feel like they are on a daring adventure.
The castle is only the ground floor and an open rooftop. The stairs are steep, so be careful!
If you are driving past Lindsborg, go a few miles out of the way to see Coronado Heights and marvel at the beauty of Kansas. Safe travels!
