I am back after the chaos of the holidays. The prompt for this week was to write a poem while using the figurative language, apostrophe.
Apostrophe: Apostrophe as a figure of speech is when a character addresses someone or something that isn’t present or cannot respond. The character might speak to someone deceased, an inanimate object, or a concept (Grammarly.com).
This prompt produced some really good pieces. Some of them were painful to hear read aloud, some were silly but all were beautiful. Mine is about speaking to the stars, to the universe. Sometimes we can’t always see the stars. Sometimes all we can see are airplanes and we have to pretend they are stars. We all deserve to see the beauty of the universe unpolluted by light. It’s an older piece but check out my The Importance of Dark Sky and go look at the stars.
Hope you are doing well. Things are dark right now but there is always light in the darkness. We can be our own hope. We are strong together. Stay safe out there.
The night is quiet
Stars shining bright
Back to the grass
Staring up up up
In to the past
Heavens whirl
As I stay connected
To the earth
The night is quiet
Stars shining bright
Blinking down at me
Less than a breath
To them. To them
Do I exist at all?
Or am I an ant,
Pest to the
Universe?
The night is quiet
Stars shining bright
Stop staring!
I shout, feeling
Naked beneath their gaze
Yet, all continue
To wink down down
On to me.
The night is quiet
Stars shining bright
Do you enjoy my woes?
My whisper can’t reach
The grass, much less
The vibrant heavens.
The night is quiet
Stars shining bright
And I stay silent
No answer come from
Night skies but
Under their gaze
I am less alone.
