One of the things on my bingo card for 2025 was to read more poetry. Yes, for writing group we filled out actual bingo cards at the start of the year. This poetry book is by an indie author and I loved it.

Meet Me Between Breaths is an exploration of love and depth in the modern world told through a collection of short stories and poetry. Lorenzo meets Eleanore on the fire escape at a Sunday night party, and from the first moments it’s clear she is not someone he is soon likely to forget. As they navigate the waters of new love, internet erotica and personal trauma, it’s their goodness, no matter how shrouded by pain it might be, that binds them together. An inspirational homage to small, beautiful moments in this dystopian world of fast-paced, swipe-right culture, this book will give you more than a few good reasons to keep believing in love.
This book of poetry and prose made me cry. Not big fat tears, but I was misty eyed. I read a lot of books. This one was beautiful and heartbreaking and real in a way that a lot of stuff I read isn’t. A general heads up, while this book does not have any super explicit scenes, it is quite clear that the characters are intimate.
The poems in this collection are short contemporary poems. They are typically written in free verse but they are also beautifully impactful. They are the type that make you want to stop and think for a moment before rereading them. The prose typically start each chapter, a few pages to immerse the reader into lives of the characters of Lorenzo and Eleanore, their introduction, their struggles but their love is in the poetry.

An interesting stylistic choice on the authors part is that while there is dialogue in the prose, he does not use quotation marks. This lack of indicators keeps the story flowing in a way that more punctuation might not. However, without quotation marks you do need to read a bit slower to make sure that you don’t miss anything.
I suggest this book for those that enjoy poetry, those that enjoy romances, and those that want a down to earth but beautiful love story. Have you read this book or any poetry this year? Let me know in the comments. Happy reading.

In terms of poetry, this year I’ve read two anthologies that each feature one of my poems.
