Writing Group: Short Story: Comfort

Tippy tap, tippy tap. I sneak through the house searching for the right place to sleep. That spot that is just right for me to circle, circle, circle, curl up in. I have my favorites: the bed my parent’s won’t let me sleep in, the bed that is just my size, the couch that has all the cozy blankets, the bed that’s not my bed that smells like mom and dad, the room with my toys, my cave, and before the door where I wait for my humans.

My name! I hear my name! But do I want to get up? I’m so warm and mom is calling in that sing-song way she does. I’m not in trouble, if I was my name would be sharp, short but it is a summons nonetheless. Besides, most of the time she sounds like that I get treats or better things. With a groan I stand and stretch to follow my human’s voice.

Oh. My. Gosh. Mom and dad are putting on their outside feet! They. Just. Said. WALK! WALK! WALK! I’m so excited! Let’s go, let’s go, let’s go slow humans. Smells, so many smells. Why won’t you stop to let me smell? Wait, was that a squirrel? Chase, let me chase it! Let me run. Wait, what’s that smell? Who peed here? I specifically claimed this tree last week.

Home. That walk was excellent, well it would have been if I could have smelled more. Silly humans, who needs to see when there are scents? I need a drink after dealing with my humans and a nap. Cold, crisp, water from my bowl. Hey! Mom! Hey! Can you refill this please? I’m sorry for being a ‘goblin’ on the walk, whatever that means. Oo, more water. Oo, a treat! Maybe I was a good boy… who am I kidding, I’m always a good boy. Now, it’s time to find a place to nap. Let’s try mom and dad’s bed with my muddy paws…
