This week for writing group we gave each other a line from a song. This lyric started our poem. No, it did not have to be the first line of a song.
I was given a line from Me and the Devil by Soap&Skin. I did not know the song title until after writing the poem. If you are curious, the lyric I gave someone was from Goodnight Moon by Shivaree.
This poem ended up darker than I intended but I’m not unhappy with the way it turned out. And I’m not sure who laid the curse; witch, warlock, or sidhe. I’ll let you decide. Happy reading.
“It must be that old evil spirit so deep down in your ground”
Personal demon, one you buried
That entity of the shadows
Whispering, whispering calling out
Tale tale heart, thumping thumping
Driving you mad
Much much to my delight.
Do they know?
The ones that miss him
Do they know?
You slayed a much loved
Monster.
Have they any idea
What he hid in the dark?
None believed your tears
Much like Cassandra.
You poor poor dear
Now you can never
Never wash your hands
Clean of the blood.
Is that a spot?
The old demon is six feet under
Bones turning to dust
But you have not escaped
That old ghost and it whispers.
Whispers to you as his own
Past haunted him.
This curse has grown fun,
In the light you must smile
Forces your hand in the dark
Inside you keen
Too bad your ancestor
Too bad they upset me.
