Writing Group: Poetry: Doorways

The prompt for this week was doorways. There are many types of doorways. I choose to interpret a book cover as one such doorway in the below poem. Let me know what abstract ways you think about doorways. Happy reading.

So many doors, so many paths
So many possibilities
How to select a single one
A single door to open
Yes, you can retreat
But no door, no path
Will leave you unchanged

Each door introduces
New friends, new foes
New loves, new challenges
New lands, new pain

The one you select first
Will change how
How you see
How you understand
The path behind
Behind the next door
And on to the next
No end in sight

Some paths you will love
Some you will hate
Some you will wish
Wish to revisit
Again and again

Each time finding
Seeing, understanding
Some new detail along this path
Each time growing
Growing and learning

Becoming something more
Finding comfort in
The revisited path
The old friends
The known tale

Open the door
Open the cover
Flip to that first page
Take a step
Take a journey
Close the book
And reflect

Yes, looking at some of the book covers that I’ve added her makes be realize how many freaking books I actually do read. Yes, I do believe that books can change our ways of thinking. I believe that we can all learn things from books, even fiction books. So read, read what makes you happy. And don’t be scared to read banned books. Happy reading.
