Writing Group: Dragon Distribution System

The prompt for this story is what would happen if mythical creatures were real in this day and age. What would people do? How would the creatures act? Creatures such dragons, mermaids, giants, unicorns, and so on. The stories produced by this prompt were fantastic.

My story is based off what is jokingly called the Cat Distribution System. This is the idea that people don’t necessarily adopt cats initially. People either find kittens in odd places and decide to keep them or a person is adopted by a stray cat.

“Dude! When did you get a dragon? That’s fantastic!”

“Umm, I didn’t really.”

“Then why is there a mini one sitting on your shoulder? She is a beautiful green by the way.”

“Well you see I was napping about a month ago now with the windows open and when I woke up there was a mother dragon flying in her hatchlings. There were seven! Seven little jewel bright hatchlings suddenly nesting in my armchair. Because the outdoors are no longer a safe place to nest or something. Who knows? I will admit they were pretty: two blues, a green, three reds, and a purple.”

“Oh, yeah that is a new chair.”

“The mother dragon, this one actually. Fed her freaking hatchlings in my chair. They eat meat from the get go! I don’t want to talk about the smell. Or the mess. Or the amount of stuffing they pulled from the chair. At least I hope it was all stuffing but there might have been some feathers.”

“Why didn’t you kick them out?”

“Have you ever tried to kick out a dragon with hatchlings? The mothers are vicious. The babies bite as well and they have these needle-like teeth. Look at the damage they did to my hands when I tried to evict them. It really wasn’t worth the hassle.”

“She doesn’t look vicious. She actually seems quite content now.”

“Well yeah, she isn’t nesting anymore. I had to leave the window open all month and about two weeks ago she took them all out one by one and started teaching them to fly. It was actually really cute. Or it would have been if the baby dragons didn’t freak out when they lost control of their flight and breathed a fireball. I had to repaint my whole front patio to cover up the fire damage, thank goodness it has been a wet spring.”

“You know, now that you mention it I remember the patio looking a bit rough last time I was here. It looks good with the new paint.”

“Thank you. Anyway, after they could fly she would take them in groups of twos or threes to teach them to hunt. More than one let a live mouse go in the house then they proceeded to hunt down, one let loose a snake. Seven half grown dragons inside, mini or not, was a nightmare while hunting INSIDE.”

“Now that you say that I notice most of your art is gone.”

“Thankfully about three days ago momma dragon here kicked them all out. I watched it while drinking coffee. It was glorious but loud. She screeched at them until they all flew off and then screeched at me until I closed the window.”

“So why do you still have this dragon?”

“She refuses to leave. She also bugs me until I feed her instead of hunting and she has moved from the living room and insists on sleeping on my bed. On my spare pillow. So yeah, I have a dragon now, whether I want one or not. I named her Emerald. I’m not sure if I like having a dragon or just resigned.”

“Either way, Emerald is beautiful, look at her preen, she knows it. I’d heard that dragons sometimes adopt people, guess it’s true. Hey, don’t dragons try to nest in the same place they were reared?”

“Aw hell.”
