Niagara Falls: Crossing the Rainbow Bridge

I spoke a little bit about the Rainbow Bridge last week but wanted to bring more attention to it. There are two ways to get across the bridge: driving and walking. Driving typically takes a lot longer because those crossing have to go through border patrol on each end and pay a toll. The actual boundary between the US and Canada runs right down the middle of the bridge and the gorge. If you cross the bridge on foot there is a $1 toll to cross. Bring quarters.

Getting to the bridge can be a bit of a walk but the views are definitely worth it. If you are going back and forth regularly while on vacation be aware that ride share people won’t take you across – they don’t want to deal with the waits, the tolls, or passport control. However, having the drop you off at the start of the bridge is worth it.

A few things to remember: the bridge is long, and it has no shade, no easy access to restrooms, and sometimes the line for passport control can be long. Before going through any of the access points to get on to the bridge have everyone in your party confirm that they have their passport. There is probably a system for those that don’t have a passport on them but just be careful.

Safe travels and leave no trace.
