Titles: Daughter of the Pirate King; Daughter of the Siren Queen
Author: Tricia Levenseller
Publication Dates: 2018 and 2018
This is a YA series that I stumbled across based off of internet recommendations. I found the first book at the library and was hooked.

Daughter of the Pirate King Synopsis:
Sent on a mission to retrieve an ancient hidden map―the key to a legendary treasure trove―seventeen-year-old pirate captain Alosa deliberately allows herself to be captured by her enemies, giving her the perfect opportunity to search their ship.
More than a match for the ruthless pirate crew, Alosa has only one thing standing between her and the her captor, the unexpectedly clever and unfairly attractive first mate Riden. But not to worry, for Alosa has a few tricks up her sleeve, and no lone pirate can stop the Daughter of the Pirate King.
In Daughter of the Pirate King, author Tricia Levenseller blends action, adventure, romance, and a little bit of magic into a thrilling pirate tale.
Daughter of the Siren Queen Synopsis:
Alosa’s mission is finally complete. Not only has she recovered all three pieces of the map to a legendary hidden treasure, but the pirates who originally took her captive are now prisoners on her ship. Still unfairly attractive and unexpectedly loyal, first mate Riden is a constant distraction, but now he’s under her orders. And she takes great comfort in knowing that the villainous Vordan will soon be facing her father’s justice.
When Vordan exposes a secret her father has kept for years, Alosa and her crew find themselves in a deadly race with the feared Pirate King. Despite the danger, Alosa knows they will recover the treasure first . . . after all, she is the daughter of the Siren Queen.
In Daughter of the Siren Queen, Tricia Levenseller brings together the perfect mix of thrilling action, tense battle scenes, and a heart-pounding romance.
This is a YA series with some tame romance and my general rule on romance is that I love it as long as it’s adding something to book that already has a good plot and characters. I will also add a trigger warning, this is a pirate book there is plenty of death via swords and pistols and mention of other things such as assault and cannibalism.
Something I find interesting about pirate books and about this series is that the setting is consistent and yet ever changing. Most of the action takes places upon a ship or various ships as the books progress and rarely do the characters look beyond the railing. However, these books are written in such a way that the setting doesn’t feel restricted.
Alosa is one of those characters that pushes through to her final goal not really caring who she hurts along the way until that sacrifice can’t be ignored. She wants to achieve her goal partly for herself but also because if she fails it will be very bad for her personally.
In book one Riden pushes aside his own desires and his own thoughts on right and wrong to do his job as first mate to his brother, Draxen. It makes him a consistently unreliable character in because he wants to do things his way but his loyalty to his Captain and brother has quite the hold on him. Book two is a bit of a dance between our two main characters, both trying to navigate something neither of them expected.
The side characters are an interesting bunch in these books as well. The author does a good job of highlighting the difference between the crews of the primary ships in the two books. It is interesting to see what traits the different captains prefer in their crews.
There is a third book in this series that allows the reader to get to know some of the side characters more as they have become the main characters. Vengeance of the Pirate Queen was published in 2023 and I’m excited to pick it up from the library soon.
I recommend this book to those that enjoy pirate stores, to those that enjoy easy reads that keep you hooked, and those that want a book with just a bit of spice. Happy reading.
