Waco Mammoth National Monument

I am way behind on my posting. Blame the holidays. Back in September I had the opportunity to visit the Waco Mammoth National Moment. This is site has actually been on my list to visit for a while and I was happy to finally have a chance to visit. This location is the only know Columbian mammoth nursery herd. Nursery herds are made up of cows and calves only, no bull mammoths. There is a set of bull mammoth fossils at this site but his bones are more recent and he was not a member of the herd. This is an active excavation site and the fossils are partially exposed. This is possible without degrading the fossils because they are protected by a covered and climate controlled building.

The entrance fee is $6 for adults and $5 for kids. The National Monument is run by Waco park rangers and they do have ranger led tours. The tours aren’t too long but there is a short walk on paved paths from the parking lot area to the covered building that protects the fossils.

I really enjoyed visiting this site, it’s a quick visit that can tell you a lot about the animals that once roamed the land and what the land was like while they were alive. Do you enjoy fossils and prehistory? Let me know in the comments. Safe travels and leave no trace.

Can you tell which of the photos above were taken on a film camera versus those taken on a digital camera?
