Gear Review for Her

Here are some products that I purchased over the last couple of years for use on our various trips, hikes, and sometimes day-to-day use. These are all things that I have used on the on the trail multiple times. What I have listed here are things that I bought new. However, I also do check the used section at REI before buying anything new, as it helps to make sure products in good condition don’t go to waste and they are typically much less expensive.

Hiking Clothes and Boots

• Patagonia Women’s Barely Baggies Shorts – These are great for running errands in or lounging outside. They were not my favorite to hike in. For me personally, I found that they rode up more that I was comfortable with especially while sweating on the trail. Overall they are comfortable but for me personally, I don’t think I would buy this style again.
• Patagonia Women’s Baggies Shorts – I preferred these over the barely baggy shorts, they are a bit longer and didn’t risk chafing as much due to a longer inseam. I found them comfortable even while sweating on the trail. These were great to hike in and I would buy these again. Yes, they do come in solid and wonderfully fun patterns.

• Women’s Merrell Moab 2 Mid GORE-TEX Hiking Boots – This is my second pair of Merrell hiking boot. These boots have carried me miles across fields and up mountains and they are still comfortable. Unfortunately, the exact boots I wear are not currently available but they do have plenty of alternative options that are also by Merrell.
  • Pros: They are water resistant while being breathable, they have ankle support, and they are comfortable. Merrell’s run about $100 to $200 but they are a good product and they last a while. I still wear my old boots to garden in. Besides hikes around Texas, I have walked through snow in Washington twice and through up mountains in Colorado in these boots.
  • Cons: The main con for these boots is that they are not insulated. Honestly, this has not been a huge issue because after a bit of hiking I warm up enough that insulated boots are not needed. And that feature is rarely needed in my case as its fairly hot where I live.

Hiking Accessories

• Merino Wool Buff – Buffs are used in a few different ways by different people. I have a few made out of different materials but this one is my favorite as it works the best for moisture-wicking. Typically I wear it around my neck like a scarf because I don’t like my neck being cold but I’ve also used them as a headband and as an ear cover.
• Kula Cloth – Alright ladies this may be an awkward topic but if you are a hiker of any sort you have probably had to use the restroom in the woods before. Kula cloths are reusable antimicrobial pee cloths. These cloths are a great way to keep your hands clean while cleaning up. They also have a couple of other nice features: reflective threads to find them easily with a flashlight at night and button so that you can store it in your pack and keep everything nice and tidy.

Buying new gear every trip is not practical. As outdoor enthusiasts we must find good gear that will work for us long term so that we don’t have to buy new gear thus protecting our finances and more importantly the environment.
