Amsterdam: Day Five

This was defiantly the art museum day. If you want to visit the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, buy your tickets in advance. Honestly, that’s my advice for pretty much any popular tourist attraction.

Van Gogh Museum

Keltin and I both loved the Van Gogh Museum. The way the museum is laid out takes you through his early years (where color was scarce), his contemporary inspiration, his self portraits as he learned color theory in Paris, his later works both in an out of hospitals for his mental health. This museum does a good job of reminding visitors that he wasn’t a great artist because of his mental health issues, he was a great artist in spite of his medical issues. And Van Gogh used his artistic ability to help himself.

Some of the works in this museum are The Potato Eaters and Sunflowers. Note: Van Gogh’s Starry Night is in New York.

The Van Gogh Museum and the Stedelijk Museum were running a joint special exhibit on Keifer as well.

Stedelijk Museum

The Stedelijk Museum is a modern art museum next door to the Van Gogh Museum. I don’t go to a lot of modern art museum and maybe that’s why some of these exhibits felt weird. One of the exhibits is a full preserved zebra in a tank of formaldehyde. It was so odd that it stuck with both Keltin and I and neither of us thought to take a picture.

The only reason we visited this museum is because our Van Gogh tickets allowed us in due to the Kiefer special exhibit. I really enjoyed Kiefer’s work that was inspired by Van Gogh, his art at the Stedelijk was a little less to my taste. It’s not bad art and he uses similar materials and stylistic elements. But the energy is different and they are not my favorite.

Check out some of Van Gogh’s work and the Kiefer Special Exhibit below. Note: The video is queued to start on Day 5. Do you enjoy either of these artists? Let me know in the comments. Safe travels.

  1. I’ve always been fascinated with Van Gogh and his art. I remember seeing his Irises in California, and then some more of his paintings in Paris.

Two of his paintings, Irises and Branches with Almond Blossom, each inspired a poem of mine.
