Amsterdam: Day Four

This day started early and ended late and yes, I did take a nap in the middle of it.

Albert Cuyp Markt

I spoke a bit about this market in my Food in Amsterdam post. Eating is mostly what we did while visiting the market. In addition to food vendors there were also some really cute clothes. I did not go shopping though because I only travel with carry on luggage and did not have room for much extra.

Dom Square Pigeons

On our way back to our hotel after the market we passed through Dom Square and the Pigeon Man was there. We did donate a couple of Euros and he happily filled our hands with birdseed and cracked corn. I was instantly covered in pigeons. They fear nothing. It was actually really fun, although I do realize that this is not for everyone. The Pigeon Man was also happy to take photos of us as well.

Zaanse Schans Windmills

This was hands down one of the most touristy things we did and we did a lot of touristy things this trip. I am basing that completely off the number of people that were there. This is a self-guided tour that we did through HopOnHopOff. They advertise it as a half-day thing but it’s not that long. That being said, we did enjoy it.

At Zaanse Schans you can learn about the wooden shoes and cheese making. We did not do either because we came for the windmills. These windmills are not originally from this location, there were moved here for historical preservation. One is actively used to mill wood. The one we got a chance to go inside is used to grind pigment for paint making. Yes, I did pickup some pigment and have dove into a new paint making hobby.

We visited at the end of the day hoping to get some sunset photos but the clouds kind of messed with that plan. I imagine that the first tour of the day is less busy if you aren’t a fan of a lot of people. There is also a museum at this location if you would rather stay inside.

See our full day here – including inside a windmill! The video is queued to start on day 4. This was a really fun – if busy – day. Would you climb into an old wooden windmill? Let me know in the comments!
