Amsterdam: Bookstores

While traveling we love to visit bookstores and I do my best to find a book that fits my definition of regional literature.

These requirements are:

  • I’m not allowed to buy a book I can easily find at home
  • Preferably something by a local author
    • From the city or country we are visiting
  • Preferably not a history book
    • I have broken this rule and I didn’t finish the book

These rules are always in flux. For example, in Spain I picked up a couple of beautifully illustrated books.

Anyway, while in Amsterdam we visited two bookstores: Athenaeum Boekhandel and The American Book Center. The first bookstore is where I found my regional literature book for this trip. Both of these bookstores are massive with multiple levels. The American Book center was pretty much all in English and mostly books that I can find easily enough at home.

Funny enough, these bookshops were across the street from each other. We explored them on a cold day, stepping inside, being surrounded by books was quite warming. I really enjoyed exploring Athenaeum Boekhandel, the layout was a bit chaotic and it felt like the perfect bookstore to get lost in.

Do you visit bookshops while traveling? Let me know in the comments! Safe travels and happy reading.
