Arizona: Hiking Papago Park

I’m behind on my posts but I’m slowly catching up. In early 2024 we went back to Phoenix for a wedding. The guys went golfing for the grooms bachelor party. So with a free day, I went hiking. Being that I didn’t have ton of time or most of my equipment past a day pack, I kept the hike easy and local and visited Papago Park.

Hole in the Wall

The Hole in the Wall is a .2 mile long trail from the parking lot and it is a very popular trail – even in the middle of the week. It is most popular with families with little kids. I had to wait longer than I would have expected to get an unobstructed view of The Hole. Yes, you can go through the hole. You can see me do that in the video below.

Double Butte Loop

The Double Butte Loop is a 2.3 mile loop trail. If you don’t climb the buttes, this is a really easy and flat trail with very little in the way of elevation. If you do chose to climb the buttes then there is so very quick elevation gain. The view from the top of the small butte can be seen below. I really enjoyed this trail for a quick morning hike. Also, it is free to visit!

I took these pictures on Ilford HP5 400 +1 35mm film. At the start of this trip we stopped by Wilson Camera. I asked one of the guys that worked there what film he liked to use for desert photography and went with his suggestion. I have used this film before and I have pushed it before so this was not something I was unfamiliar with. I will note that the Phoenix sun was really bright and added some great contrast to these photos. We actually dropped this film off before leaving Phoenix and they mailed the negatives to us after the film was developed. The pictures are sent as digital scans. Taking film through security always makes me nervous because it can get messed up if it goes through the scanner.

Past Papago Park Visit

Desert Botanic Garden – I absolutely loved visiting the Desert Botanic Garden. They have so much great history, and information on the plants. Not to forget all the wildlife we saw from rabbits, to snakes, to quail, and bees!
