Football on Film

At the start of the football season I had the opportunity to join Keltin on the sidelines for the Tarleton versus Baylor game. Yes, unfortunately Tarleton did loose this game. That being said, the photos came out pretty awesome. I shot these on our Pentax K1000 using black and white Kodak 3200ISO film, shot at box speed, with a fixed 50mm lens.

I love a fixed 50mm lens, yeah I don’t have a zoom but honestly, removing an element allows me to focus more on the art. Framing the shot and making sure I have the aperture (f-stop) and shutter speed correct while the ISO is set by the film. Yes, I like color film but as someone who is still learning the art of film photography staying predominately with black and white film helps me learn consistency.

With film I’m never going to get the type of photos the official sports photographer is going to get with all the digital cameras and I’m not supposed to. That doesn’t mean that I can’t get actions shots, I can but I’m going to get other things too. I get the still moments, those times the stadium is holding its breath. I get the people on the sideline that are normally over looked.

Despite the fact that I was exhausted after this game I had a great time and would do it again. What do you think of sports captured on film? Let me know in the comments.

This is not film but it does show a behind the scenes view in color of the Baylor v. Tarleton game.
