Title: Warrior of the Wild
Author: Tricia Levenseller
Publication Date: 2019
Publishing House: Feiwel and Friends

As a kid I read The Outsiders in class and I loved it that I went to the school library and checked out every S. C. Hinton book the library had. Apparently I’m still happy to do that as an adult. This author’s name might look familiar as she wrote the Daughter of the Pirate King series.

Synopsis: As her father’s chosen heir, eighteen-year-old Rasmira has trained her whole life to become a warrior and lead her village. But when her coming-of-age trial is sabotaged and she fails the test, her father banishes her to the monster-filled wilderness with an impossible quest: To win back her honor, she must kill the oppressive god who claims tribute from the villages each year—or die trying.

As with Levenseller’s other work, this is a YA novel and a fairly quick read. I have always loved author that write badass female main characters that are capable of taking care of themselves. Rasmira cannot help that she is treated different as the heir, she does try but the elder generation doesn’t listen to her requests. There is also the expectation that she be either a woman or a warrior.

Her exile into the wilds is painful, a slap in the face for all she has worked for but it is also a chance for growth. It is a chance to understand the folly of her people’s ways. In the wilds she meet Soren and Iric, exiles like herself, young men trying to survive, unable to return home until they have completed their own impossible tasks. She must find the strength to prove herself and the courage to lead others to prove themselves as well.

I suggest this book to those who enjoy Levenseller’s other works, those who enjoy a good YA read, to those who are looking for a story of growth. Happy reading.
