Arizona: Desert Botanic Garden

When visiting the Desert Botanic Garden in the summer visitors should plan early. We originally were going to arrive at 9am but after a couple of days in the sun we decided to get there when they opened at 7am. Yes, you do have to pick a time slot when buying tickets and yes, that time slot can be adjusted based on availability.

As can be seen in my video below, we saw so much wildlife: quail and dove, rabbit and squirrels, even a snake! There is a variety of life in the desert. The really neat aspect of this garden is that in addition to teaching visitors about the different types of desert plants and biomes, it also teaches visitors about how the native people lived within this desert environment.

The garden has a special exhibit and small garden area where they teach visitors about the difference between cactus and succulents. If I remember correctly, all succulents are cactus but not all cactus are succulents. Endangered species are also grown in this beautiful garden.

Keltin and I found a local film shop that I will talk more about in a later post but they had this unique 120mm colored film that he tested out at the gardens and I am absolutely in love with how these photos came out.

What do you think of botanic gardens? Would you visit one in the desert? Let me know in the comments!

  1. The Ethel M. Chocolate Factory in Las Vegas had an adjoining cactus garden when I visited it years ago (don’t know if it’s still there).

I’ve also been to the United States Botanical Garden in D.C., and it was fascinating.
