Arizona: Desert Foothills Scenic Drive

We wanted to go explore the desert a bit without hiking. We did not have the gear with us and the heat was trying to melt me. A family member suggested taking a drive down Old Scottsdale Road. While there we found the Desert Foothills Scenic Drive. It’s not anything fancy but there is a little turn parking area with information on the desert plants, animals, and climate. It was a really great place to local flora in a natural and mostly untouched setting.

As you drive down Scottsdale Road there are information signs labeling the plants but honestly, the turn off gives you the best information without having to pull off to the side of the road. This is a free scenic drive that ends in the town of Cave Creek. We stopped at the Rock Art Gallery in Cave Creek because giant shiny rocks are cool.

Keltin took the photos below with his 120mm film camera. Saguaro cactus don’t start growing arms until they are 50 years old. These cactus are significantly older than our 1938 Rollicord camera. There is something magical about capturing them on film.
