I mentioned last week that the resort we stayed at backed up to the Phoenix Mountains Preserve. This preserve is free to visit and is open from 5am to 7pm. There are some low peaks hikers can hike up. As we were just there to get in a couple of miles for general exercise and didn’t have our gear, we didn’t scale any peaks this trip.
That being said, even without gaining a ton of elevation there is so beautiful scenery; I’ve come to realize that I love the scrubby beauty of the desert. Picture doesn’t do it justice at all. Loving the beauty does not mean that I loved the heat. Even early it got hot and there is so little moisture in the air. Even just on these short hikes through the preserve we brought plenty of water.
The trails are fairly easy to follow with the occasional sign post and for the most part they are wide if rocky. Dogs are allowed I believe but must be on leash. Also, this is a popular park and we saw others out walking every few minutes. If you hike out here, respect the wildlife, this is their home, we are just visitors. Remember to leave no trace and safe travels.
