Berlin: Walking Tour

One of the thongs that Keltin wanted to do in Berlin was take a city tour. He found a 4 hour walking tour with Visit Berlin. This tour was €20 per adult, they do provide other tours that are not walking tours, like buses. That being said, Berlin is a very walkable city and they have wonderful public transportation.

After we visited in February there was a public transportation strike. In a city that depends on public transportation this can bring things to a standstill. When the trains are running, they come often and are easy to navigate.

Our tour guide for the walking tour was actually French, he had come to Berlin several years before to study WWII and hadn’t left. He was knowledgeable and didn’t lead the group too quickly. There was even a short break for lunch. This tour was mainly on the East side of Berlin with some points, like Check Point Charlie, crossing into West Berlin. If you do take a tour like this, wear good walking shoes and bring water, I also suggest using the restroom before the tour starts as there are many places to stop. You might also consider bringing snacks. We were able to stop shortly for lunch on this tour but there was a tour that we took later that we didn’t have that option and needed snacks.

This was very much a history centered tour. Berlin in a relatively young city by European standards and Germany as a country is actually younger than the US. Many of the building pictured above were designed to look older than they actually are. Some of these buildings were rebuild after WWII and even after the Berlin Wall fell.

I highly suggest taking a tour like this if you visit Berlin. It is a crash course in the history of the city, pre-WWII to post WWII, and in present day. There is a lot of walking and it can definitely invoke some emotions, that being said the information provided is well worth the cost. Do you like walking tours? Let me know in the comments. Safe travels!
