Valencia: Torres de Serranos

On our walking tour, our guide told us that the view from these towers is the second best view in the city. The best view is from the bell tower of the Valencia Cathedral. You do have to pay to climb the bell tower and the stairs are narrow. The Serrano Towers are free to climb, all they ask is that you let the “ticket” office know how many are climbing and where you are from. I’m not sure why, probably a data collection thing, where are people visiting from.

Construction on the towers was started in 1392. These towers were once a gate in the city wall. The rest of the wall was torn down in 1865, this portion was kept because at the time it was a prison for the nobility from 1586 and 1887. The picture below is the view from the first landing at the top of the main stairs. On the lefthand side of the picture is the bell tower. We will be visiting the cathedral in a later post.

The view is fantastic and well worth climbing the 50 or so stairs. These towers are near the shores of what used to be the Turia River that ran through the city. The river was diverted after a massive flood in 1957. Now, the diverted riverbed is a greenbelt that runs through the city.

I setup the video so that it starts at the Serrano Towers. Check out the size of the doors, they look small at a distance but are quite large up close – much taller than me.
