Olympic Peninsula: Pyramid Peak Trail

Our second hike after Hurricane Ridge was the Pyramid Peak Trail. We had intended initially to hike the Spruce Railroad trail but it was closed so we took a different trail from the same trailhead. To get to the North Shore Day Use Area you travel up highway 101 to the end of the lake before turning on Camp Junior David Road, this is dirt road that take you by private property. The road is narrow, be careful. There were a couple of other cars at the day use area but we did not see a single person on the trail, it was just us and the trees and the birds.

This trail was beautiful, I’ve seen some amazing places but the green and the silence were magical. This is a fairly steep trail with plenty of roots to step over, some muddy areas, and there where a couple places where we had to almost crawl under trees that had fallen over the switchbacks of the trail. On this hike we had over 2,000 feet of elevation gain, our calves were burning long before we made it to the top.

We saw so many different types of fungus! In so many different colors and sizes, more about them soon!

I still cannot get over the size of the trees! These weren’t even the largest!

Park of the trail crossed over a slide of some sort, this cleared area presented a fantastic view of Lake Crescent. While in the middle crossing the slide cleared area it appeared massive, a scar on the side of a mountain. Later, while heading back to Port Angeles we looked for the slide area. It was fairly easy to find but overall it looked so much smaller than it had appeared while we were crossing it.

We would love to go back and hike the Spruce Railroad Trail when it is open. Have you hiked any of the tails around Lake Crescent? If so, what did you think? Let me know in the comments! Have a fantastic weekend!
