Weekend Wanderings: St. Patrick’s Day and Recycled Books

St. Patrick’s Day was not wild and crazy for my boyfriend and me but there was good beer. We headed to Denton and enjoyed a beer on the square. The is a new brewing company in the area called Rabbit Hole Brewing and we taste tested the Rapture Fusion Brown Ale. The beer is definitely some that I will drink again.

After our brews we headed over to Recycled Books, our reason for coming to Denton. A good friend of mine had asked me to get a book signed for her by a visiting author because she couldn’t make it. Being a book lover, I said yes on reflex. The book she wanted signed was Paperbacks from Hell by Grady Hendrix. I bought the book and was actually able to get it signed before the author did his presentation. His note said:

Mattie-

Laci says you exist. I don’t believe her.

As we watched the presentation we got to try some beer that was donated by Denton County Brewing Company. Being that it was St. Paddy’s Day I tried the Irish Red, also an excellent beer. But back to the book material presentation.

Horror is not my prefered genre. And I would not have gone to this presentation had my friend not asked me to pick up a copy of the book. That being said I am glad that I went. Paperbacks from Hell looks at The Twisted History of ’70s and ’80s Horror Fiction. Hendrix presentation of his material was fantastic and hilarious. I have been to comedy shows where I didn’t laugh as hard as I did at the presentation of the history of the horror genre. I wasn’t the only one laughing, the whole room was full of laughter.

Grady’s presentation on his book covered many areas in relation to the early horror genre from the forerunners to cover art, quotes, different elements of titles, and popular plot points along with a variety of other things. If you get a chance pick up a copy of Paperbacks from Hell and if you have the opportunity go listen to this author talk, you won’t regret it.

Now for a little bit more on Recycled Books. It is a massive used bookstore. If you can think of a topic, they have a section for it. A friend of mine introduced me to it when we were in high school and I’ve done my best to take all my book loving friends to it since then. Recycled is three stories and the first time you go you will probably get lost. Don’t stress though, it is more than worth it to get lost in this book store.
