Foodie Friday: Gingerbread: Blogmas

My great grandmother’s gingerbread recipe. Happy Holidays!

Several years ago my Nana and I were going through her recipes that she had inherited from her mother and I found some that are perfect for the holidays. The first recipe I found was for homemade eggnog. Personally I have a slight addition to eggnog but making it is kind of a pain and I haven’t done it in awhile although I am considering trying it again for the fun of it.

The second holiday recipe I found was for gingerbread. I had actually never had gingerbread until this. Not the real stuff anyway. Just the stuff you buy in the box to build a gingerbread house with and gingerbread cookies.

Most of the ingredients in this recipe are easy to find but one stumped me: pure sorghum. I finally found some in Old Town Grapevine in the general store. Since then I’ve found it a couple of other places. One of which is Woody’s Smokehouse and you can buy it here.

Here is the recipe as I found it. Anything in brackets I added for clarification.

Ethel’s Ginger Bread

Ingredients:

  • 1 C. Sugar
  • 1 C. Crisco
  • 1 C. Pure Sorghum
  • 1 Tsp. Ginger
  • 1 Tsp.Cinnamon
  • 1 Tsp. All-Spice
  • 1 Tsp. [Baking] Soda in 1 C. Boiling Water
  • 2 C. Flour
  • 2 Eggs well beaten and added last

Directions:

Bake at 350 degrees. DO NOT OVER BAKE

(WHEN YOU BEGIN TO SMELL IT REAL GOOD ITS DONE)

Put all together and mix well.

**Tips** I bake this is two loaf pans that are greased and floured at 350 degrees for 50 minutes.

Let me know what you think and I’d love to know what you are baking this holiday season! Happy baking!
